Yesterday we were filling out these academic and character reports. One of my children --identity withheld to protect the cute-- was filling in the back of the character report under "My Strengths and Weaknesses."

She had started writing, "I'm very..." but didn't finish, it was just blank.

"What is this?" I asked her, "What did you want to say here?"

"Oh! That should say,'I'm very forgetful!'"

"...and you didn't finish it why?"

"I forgot!"

We *both* thought that was pretty funny.

Proof that my oldest always picks "C"...

...when offered a choice of "A" or "B".

I was doing a chalkboard drawing (poorly, lol) of the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria sailing to America and had labeled them. Juliet comes up to me, studies them, says their names, then asks "Which one did Columbus actually sail on?"

"I'm not sure," I answered, "I think it was the Santa Maria but I can check."

"NO! I've got it! It was the Mayflower!"

*Sigh*

The Joys of Hearing Loss

Sometimes having a daughter (Skye) with a unilateral hearing loss can be frustrating, as it is hard to tell when she has heard me and when she hasn't (among other things).

But today we saw the funny side of hearing loss.

The girls were all in one room, having a conversation about a new story they were going to write. They were trying to come up with character names.

Skye: Her first name's Bethany. What about her last name?

At this point I stick my head in the door and ask of her sister, "What is Jeffrey eating?"

Her sister says, "Fishsticks."

Not having heard my interruption, Skye says, "Fishsticks? Bethany Fishsticks? What kind of name is that? That is a weird name!"

We were all laughing after that one.

My 6yo understands there is no Santa Claus, no Tooth Fairy.

But the other day, we were talking about fairies, and my dh said to everyone, "But you know, fairies aren't real."

We were playing "Marshmallow Challenge," where the girls answer questions and we throw marshmallows at them for correct answers, when dh ask Jane (almost 6) what were the three gifts the Magi brought Jesus.

Jane: Ummmm, silver or gold?

Dh: Gold, good.

Jane: Oryen tar.

Dh and I: huhhh??

Jane: Oryen tar! You know "We three kings of oryen tar, bearing gifts we travel afar?"

...why Jane (5) is the sweetest child on earth (I'm not playing favorites, but her temperament IS more pleasant than all of her siblings put together, LOL).

The opening lines of a letter to one of her penpals:

What's so beautiful is that she means it, to the very depths.

My soon to be 3yo had taken to calling every day "Friday."

"On Friday, we went to the post office!" (it was Tuesday)

"Daddy came home on Friday." (Saturday)

She calls it "Fy-day". She must think we are all saying "Five Day," however, because now when she doesn't want to say "Fyday" she calls it "Sixday."

"Mommy, on Friday, I mean Sixday, you cut my hair!"

"Rose made muffins on Sixday."

I'm wondering if "Sevenday" will be next. :)

Batty: If I play Study Dog on da computer, I'll get a marshmallow!

Me: (reiterating a conversation we had just had) No, dear, if you go in the potty instead of in your diaper you can get a marshmallow.

Skye: Yeah, playing Study Dog IS the treat! It's like a big, fat, white marshmallow!

Batty: Skye won't share her crackers! (crying)

Me: Well, it's her snack Batty, she doesn't have to share it. It would be nice if she would share, but she doesn't have to.

Batty, going back into the kitchen: Mom says you have to be nice to me!

"Mommy? What's a mose?"

Me: "A mose? I don't think that's a word. Do you see it somewhere?"

She spells it to me from her book:


"See Mommy? M...O...S...E...S"

Ahhhh...yes! The book was The Beginner's Bible, and Moses is the plural of "mose." ;-)
